History

The North American Association of Flying Effects Directors (NAAFED) was founded in 1997 with the goal of promoting flying effects safety through education and training. Each year, NAAFED conducts a performer rigging workshop in DeKalb, IL. Workshop participants arrive from all over the globe to attend lectures, rig and operate different types of flying systems, experience flying choreography, and sharpen their flying skills!

Instruction

Guest lectures by a variety of industry professionals complement the instruction by the team of regular instructors, which includes well known experts Tracy Nunnally and Bill Auld. Participants receive the benefit of learning from ETCP Certified Riggers – Arena and Theatre, and ETCP Recognized Trainers. Let us know if you are ETCP Certified and would like to earn renewal credits for attending!

What you will learn

Participants will be exposed to the basics of good theatrical rigging practices, as well as hands-on exposure to a wide variety of performer rigging systems. By the end of this workshop, a participant who arrived with basic theatrical knowledge should be able to recognize unsafe rigging conditions, converse fluently with a flying effects rigger, efficiently assist with the installation of a flying effects system, and operate a flying effects system for a production. Practical application will follow lecture-based presentations to provide attendees with the opportunity to practice the theories learned.
